sub_divided: cos it gets me through, hope you never stop (Default)
[personal profile] sub_divided
I've found a sleeping schedule that isn't conducive to working, socializing, or losing weight, but I like it because it makes me feel like I have more time than I really do, and because it's the first one I've managed to keep three days in a row all semester. Basically I go to sleep around 7pm and wake up at 3am, when I do the homework I went to sleep to avoid doing the night before.

[livejournal.com profile] sesame_seed tagged me for this.

1. You're massively fandom-experienced and I respect you a whole lot. That's probably why I save my most badly behaved, least respectful, most argumentative comments for your journal -- because you seem like you can handle them.

2. I haven't seen you since we both moved out of the dorms, but I get the impression that you are doing really, really badly. Is that right? I hope it isn't. I never returned those headphones I borrowed and I also forgot your birthday, totally inexcusable. We should meet up, for dinner or something, before winter break.

3. It's your fault I'm watching way too much anime these days (as opposed to skimming way too much manga, or reading way too much fanfiction, or spending way too long on livejournal (oh wait)). You're a total enabler! I love being able to leave you long long long rambling comments without worrying over how they look, and I love your long replies back.

4. Another enabler. Good luck on finals, I'm with you on the 'Oh God I'm Screwing Myself Over' front (the only reason I have not wasted so much money as time is that I am too lazy to bother with auctions).

5. You sometimes describe yourself as cynical or pessimistic, but I don't see it at all. You're the nicest, most sincere, most principled person I know. I really admire you, for your talents and for your philosophy. You write the best book reccommendations. Sometimes I think we have a lot in common, and that makes me happy, because who wouldn't want to have things in common with you?

6. WHAT THE HECK DO YOU DO? I've always wondered this. Are you really a secret agent? Because I could totally believe that.

7. You combine unshakeable self-confidence with humor at your own expense. I have no clue how you do this. If you could bottle that attitude, you'd make a fortune. Then you could quit your job and find a better one! (Dude, sorry it sucks.)

8. You're not the terrible hypocrite you think you are, and no I'm not just saying that because don't know the dark secret awful truth or whatever. Hopefully we'll see each other around: I'll buy you dinner to make up for that time I should have treated you, but didn't because I am socially retarded.

9. I wish I commented more on your journal, because you're a great friend and even better artist, but I am just not interested in dolls. To show it's nothing personal I will tag you for this meme, just like I always tag you for memes. (I have to do this because otherwise you would never say anything at all about yourself.)

10. You're the only person I'd watch Stargate: Atlantis for. /sap

Everyone is saying their ten are EASY to guess, and none of them have been! They're easier from the inside, maybe. Exactly half the people who were tagged are on the list, btw.

And while I'm at it one more meme:
Go to your Calendar and find the first entry for each month of 2005. Post the first line or so of it in your journal, and that's your 'Year In Review'.

I have a reliable internet again! Have some celebatory Samurai Champloo not!fanart! Happy (Late!) New Year!

Feb
Around 11:30am today I looked up from answering email, noticed it was 11:30am, and thought damn. When's the last time I went to that GEOSCI lecture anyway?

March
The New York Public Library’s photo archive is now online: http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/index.cfm. If you need me look down—I’ll be the puddle of goopy happiness on the floor.

April
This is not an April Fool's Day post because I have no sense of humor.

May
Link: Article on bride abduction in Kyrgyzstan. The numbers quoted in that article are lower than the ones I found in other places (half of all marrigages in Kyrgyzstan are the result of abductions, and at least a third are the result of involuntary abductions, as opposed to 80% and 51%).

June
My overall impression is AUGH DEAD FROM LACK OF ENDING.

July
The laptop's CD/DVD burner and I are fighting a war. Every day there are another half-dozen casualties. As I gaze across my desk, littered with the corpses of failed CD-Rs, my determination grows. Comrades! Victims of write-error! I swear on my honor that your sacrifice will not be in vain!

August
V says I should use this icon for this post, because it is completely inappropriate. Okay!

Sept
*gives up on Hurricane Katrina condolence post*

Oct
Yesterday, 11pm, still 250 pages of reading[1] and who-knows-how-many hours of Math homework to do. Naturally, I panic and write fanfic.

Nov
WIN. She's been translating a chapter every two weeks!

Where are you? [POLL]

Pretty accurate.

Great essays that appeared on my flist, to which my only response was "Wow, I really agree with that, so much that I have absolutely nothing to say in response":
worldserpent: Contract vs Status in fiction writing
kiraseldon: Noir, homosociality and why I think the Japanese like yaoi so much
and
Part 3 of [livejournal.com profile] telophase's series on what makes professional shojo work. (In this case it's not so much that I feel there's no space for comments, as that I don't know enough about design to make them.)

In other essay-ish news (that is old enough to not really be news anymore), the comments thread here about plagarism in published manga has a comment linking to more interesting examples of it, like Battle Vixens vs Tengo Tenge, stock photography abuses in Slam Dunk, Nana, and Soujourn (American comic, I have that issue actually), and D.Gray-man copping from Trigun etc. I'm pointing this out mainly because I've never liked D.Gray-man. (Other series that're fairly popular, but that I just don't see the appeal of: Gintama, Wild Adapter.)

Because I haven't written anything recently, and because I've really enjoyed reading fic notes like these and the ones locked on [livejournal.com profile] petronia's journal, I'm going to spend the next hour before I have to leave for class writing a couple lines for each of my old fics, in order. I have a bad tendency towards retroactively assigning my own motivations, but I'll try not to do that here.

Less Than Ideal
First ever fanfic. Even after editing it's still too abrupt. I'm really bad at transitioning from action to exposition, which is why most of the time I cut the exposition altogether. The title, which is from a best of the 60s sci fi anthology, was supposed to be ironic but is actually just bad. Planned to eleven chapters and an epilogue, with awful-in-more-ways-than-one Itachi/Naruto, a parallel Sasuke and Jiraiya storyline, and some crazy demon fox action. I can't reread this and like to pretend it doesn't exist.

Scenes from the Marriage of Sasuke and HInata Uchiha
[livejournal.com profile] fickletastictot's favorite ship + one too many angst fics on [livejournal.com profile] hyugacest = this. The first chapter was supposed to be a parody or something. This is my most popular story on ff.net.

Orders
I hate when people do the thing Kakashi does here. My brother knows I hate this, and does it just to annoy me. I was something of a word miser with this one, only saying about half of what needed to be said, and relying on the reader to fill in the rest. That's not intelligence, that's laziness. Pairing dynamics are based on beta-work I did for [livejournal.com profile] falxumbra's Kakashi/Sasuke apron fic that I suspect was based on equal parts [livejournal.com profile] gelfling8604 and [livejournal.com profile] darkeyedwolf.

After-School Activities
The titles aren't getting any better here ahaha. When Light kisses L and L tells him that that was "Unoriginal," this is a direct swipe from chapter three of what might be my favorite Yami no Matsuei fanfic ever, A Midsummer's Nighmare by Experimental.

Amnesia
This started as a songfic (Garbage - As Heaven is Wide). The point was to write something that made the reader lose track of reality along with Light. Erased memories that leave unfillable gaps is an idea I got from somewhere else -- Card Captor Sakura, maybe. That or the Neuroscience class I audited over the summer. Realistic dreams you confuse for reality comes from another Yami no Matsuei fic I can't remember the title of right now, the one with the OC who's a dreamwalker. Anyone? T

Burn Down Misa
Out of everything I've written, this is my favorite. Officer Ryo Nagai is TO THIS DAY the only OC I've written whose name I remember. I forgot Misa spoke in third person when I wrote this, but that turned out not to matter. I made this a characterization piece just so I'd have a decent way to end it; the reason I wrote it was for the scene where Misa is being photographed as a witness, and poses like a model. I got this scene, and the writing style, from Mr. Paradise by Elmore Leonard.

The Contemplation of the Former Investigator Aizawa
Written after I'd seen scans for the chapter when Aizawa leaves the force, but before I knew what they said. This one is pure plagarism. (No really -- Covered Mirrors by Jorge Luis Borges.)
