I've been in a kind of media-consumption funk for the last month (needing fandom to unwind from school but not having the drive for anything creative) so I've just been watching reading watching commenting watching, but not really posting. Suddenly I've got a ton of things I want to write and a ton of things I want to post...I'd like to claim credit for the transformation, but the truthfully I think it's just that the weather's gotten better.

Anyway the point is that a few weeks ago I (finally) caught up on the second season of Avatar: the Last Airbender and now I've decided to do something about it. ^^; Avatar is one of those weird shows you admire from a distance but don't really know what to do with, or at least that's how I feel. In the past I've done a variety of things (series overview, compiled theme list, long genfic, short fic recs, highlights-style episode rewrite, thumbnail theater, icon bases). And now:

[2] Not at all, but I couldn't find the specific kind of "short stories within a larger narrative" I was looking for

When I am very very very stressed and want to do something mindless, I make icon bases. Not icons, just bases. They sit on my computer and I don't do anything with them. But! Today! Today I'm going to put the ones that most need text up and, ala [livejournal.com profile] telophase, ask for suggestions.

15 + 21 + 4 + 5 = 45 icons )

If you want to use any of these as-is, go ahead. If you want to modify any of these youself, go ahead -- but please comment with the result, because I'd like to see it.

I'm finally caught up on Avatar. This prompted by two very good shortfics on [livejournal.com profile] theavatar100 (a decent fic comm in general, if not the most prolific).

1.Visitor by [livejournal.com profile] potato (formerly ratherodd)
2.Exhibit by [livejournal.com profile] v_voltaire

Rather than attempt an analysis of the latest episodes (ha! ha!), I've decided to summarize with pictures. As an added bonus, these pictures are all 100x100 pixels and are meant for use as ICONS/ICON BASES. They are pretty, I think, but only because the show itself is pretty.

For those just tuning in: Avatar is another olde China AU anime. But, umm, it's American.

Book I, Chapter IX: The Waterbending Scroll )

Whew! That was more work than I thought, so you get a non-spoiling paragraph per episode from here on out. A shame, because nine wasn't even my favorite episode. Ten was.

Episode 10 )
Episode 11 )
Episode 12 )
Episode 13 )

In conclusion, I'll be very upset if this show isn't picked up for a second season.

You can find torrents of the episodes here and sum more icon bases for this show at my website.

French Shout-out )

Once again, Avatar. Turn back, o ye non-believers! Or, better yet, WATCH THIS SHOW. You should at the very least read this fanfic--I swear to God you don't need to know anything about Avatar to understand what's going on. I'll tell you what you need to know, ok? And then you can tell me where I've gone wrong, because my proofreading skills stop at 4:00am and/or 4,000 words, whichever comes soonest.

Title: Wind and Rain
Series: Avatar: the Last Airbender
Timeline: Takes place after episode four, which I haven't seen yet
Rating: PG. Strong hints of Katara/Aang.
Genre: Action-adventure. Sokka, Katara and Aang make an emergency landing in the rain forrest.

6,400 words. How the hell did THAT happen? )

I think I'll wait for a few more episodes before I do anything else for Avatar (it is so EASY, though, to fic for). In the meantime, *stares mournfully at L backstory story which is refusing to write itself*

Livejournal mood analyzer (enter your username):

I'm distressed in my fandom-journal (Why can't you post about something happy once in a while? Your friends would appreciate it) but "a rosy-cheeked ray of f'ing sunshine 24/7" in my real-life journal. Um. I'm not trying to be duplicious? But art is born of frustration, struggle, and a hopeless defiance of conventional thought, so of course it comes out like that. Really.

I worte an L's childhood "drabble" for the current challenge at [livejournal.com profile] deathnote100. It won't make sense if you haven't read chapter 59--actually it probably won't make sense, period, as I dragged it out of a longer in-progress fic and stripped all the context away. I love [livejournal.com profile] deathnote100: it's the only "100" community where less than one out of every 15 submissions actually ends at 100 words.

And! I finally worked up the courage to re-read that HxH fic. Not as bad as I'd feared, not as good as I'd hoped. I added a little bit to the last section, which was literally written with my father standing over me taping his watch as we missed one train after another.

***

[livejournal.com profile] rianax totally gives the best writing prompts ever. Can we put some of those in the Avatar 20 themes woah, getting ahead of myself there. Does anyone else want to do an Avatar: the Last Airbender [livejournal.com profile] 20themes list with me? The show's got a stupid-simple premise and a where-haven't-I-seen-that-before magic system, but the writing is sharp, the acting is top-notch, the characters rock and it is so, so pretty. It needs fiction.
