Fun! In a smoke-and-mirrors kind of way. I don't think I've ever seen a movie this fun and this...cheap, I guess, at the same time.

Mission: Impossible III moves really quickly. It's a heist movie, but instead of planning for months to set up one big showpiece, and then explaning to the audience exactly how it was done, it just goes. Tom Cruise is in a four-man team with Ving Rhames from the first two Mission: Impossibles and two new faces, an Irish man (Jonathan Rhys Meyers, the coach from Bend it Like Beckham) and a Chinese woman (although she is not actually Chinese). They come up with impossible plans for infiltrating ridiculously heavily guarded buildings, plans that must be followed to the second because there is no room for error at all, and before you (the audience, by which I mean me) can figure out why it was necessary to put a tracer on that manhole cover, blow up that wall, or cause that traffic accident, we are already onto the next part of the scene. more, no spoilers )

Overall a very fun movie whose plot I will probably not remember a month from now. But this is an unsustainable series, isn't it? Eventually Tom Cruise will run out of superiors to double-cross him and/or impossibly guarded buildings to break into. Not to mention the part where he can already take out whole elevators of specially-trained black ops using only a pen. If the producers keep trying to out-do themselves, subsequent movies are going to be very, very silly.

This summer I want to see:
The Inside Man
Thank You For Smoking saw it, great movie
Brick awesome!
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (saw it, just as terrible and awesome I'd thought it would be)
Superman Returns (omg the trailer looks SO GOOD.)
The Break-Up (ahahaha but. Vince Vaughn!)
Snakes on a Plane this was good too!

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Happy Hikago Day!

I'm taking the history course. Thanks to everyone who answered the poll! The other course I'm taking is SLAVIC 320: Central European Films. I've never taken a film or art analysis course before, it's really cool (so many things I would never have noticed on my own the professor kindly points out to us) but also really disorienting, because although I blog about movies all the time I don't know how to discuss them academically. Where do you even start.

pros and cons )

So.

[Poll #721732]

[1] Professor Ralph Williams, Resident Genius. Speaks speaks a dozen languages (two of them imaginary), likes to pace and rant, writes his syllabus like poetry ("Engaged reading; consistant presence in class (without which, no grade); two essays, perhaps a midterm, surely a final"), has an accent I'm pretty sure he invented himself. Visibly enthusiastic about the literature he teaches, and it's a contagious enthusiasm.

HOWEVER. His imaginary accent is whiny and drawn-out, he speaks with unnatural levels pitch variation, he likes rhetorical questions ("late papers will not be graded, does everyone understannnnnnnnd, is that finnnnnne, Yay Nay?, and as for office houuuuuurs..."), and (worst of all) he's subject to frequent transports to mystical bliss. No really. He loves iterature so much that it transports him to another plane of existance in the middle of his lectures, during which he speaks in foreign tongues (mostly Italian).

Basically you either love him or you hate him, and though I'm sure I could learn to love him my first reaction is to hate him.

Sorry for all the scholastics lately, will try to make up for it with completely non-academic fanfic.

What I didn't mention about my final paper: it's 1001 Nights fanfic. XD based on Hussain Haddaway's translation; I didn't do any research (other than reading the stories) so it's a pretty superficial take, mostly style-copying. Either I got away with that or I didn't, I'll know next week when the grades come back.

Did you know that Edgar Allen Poe wrote a story called "The Thousand and Second Night" where Shaharazad commits suicide?

Title: The Jeweler and the Man from Mosul
Series: The Arabian Nights, trans. Hussain Haddaway
Note: BLOCK PARAGRAPHS OF DEATH, other forms of tediousness. Written as an actual Night, so I guess it's more orignal fiction than fanfiction.

The ending is sketchy. Actually, the whole thing is sketchy.

Twelve Kingdoms! That last fic is bothering me because... )

Loveless! Things I like about the manga that you never, ever see in fanfic. )

Before I forget: updated gmail with H2 volumes 3-8. More H2 to come over the next few days -- or if you don't want to wait for me, go here. Baseball manga, classic.

NOTE TO SELF: MAINTAIN PERSPECTIVE
I try to be good about this, but lately I've been slipping.

McGill course guide descriptions = hours of fun for the the whole family. It's hard to explain what was so funny about these, except that the way they were written perfectly matched the personality of the kind of person you'd expect to find teaching a class like that. Or maybe I'm just weird. Anyway, here they are:

This is for the anonymous fic meme over on [livejournal.com profile] obakesan. I'm sort of disappointed in the requesters for that meme -- isn't the point of an anonymous fic meme that you ask for all the terrible fics you wouldn't normally admit to wanting to read? I was going to request a fic, but I couldn't think of anything traumatic enough. Mizuki/Yuuta? Chad/Ichigo? Those are kind of tame. I don't know if I have any really horrific secret fetish pairings.

Note! I used convert-me.com for all weird distance units. 50 bu = approximately the length of a football field (although I have no idea if bu is actually the unit that would have been used in this case.)

Distance units are seriously the eternal bane of my existence. Maybe I should just stick with the metric system, I mean Youko is probably thinking in meters anyway. But I have trouble using meters in ancient contexts, because I associate them with Science. By the way, I was going to use Olde China time units in this fic, but then I remembered that every two-hour period in a day had a different name and I'd be stuck with "the hour of the rat" or something, which would just be ridiculous. (It straddles midnight, for those of you who want to write bad punfic.)

Film screening. I was also at conference on academic freedom after 9/11, but that wasn't very interesting.

The Lost Boys of Sudan )

There's some other stuff I could say about prejudice, both racial (African from Africa vs. African-American) and technical (although the filmakers pretend that the cameras are invisible, they must have influenced the proceedings), but I'm not sure I could do it coherantly so I'll end here. I'll point out, though, that some of what the Lost Boys considered Dinka culture seemed, to me, to be refugee-camp culture. After the movie there was a short lecture on the Sudanese civil war and its impact on the current crisis in Darfur.

I think the only march I've been to that's suceeded (or at least been on the winning side) was the Million Mom March, which was for tighter gun control. But you never know! More than 200 college organizations are participating, so at the very least it will be a lot of young people having a good time in nice weather. Sort of like the activists who have pitched tents in front of Murray Hall to protest next year's budget cuts, although they are also fighting for something they have a personal stake in.

(Anyone else effected by this? I know [livejournal.com profile] morning_songs is from New Jersey, but like me and [livejournal.com profile] falxumbra, she goes to college out of state. Or maybe I should say, like everyone: NJ's third-biggest export, after pharmaceuticals and cranberries, is college students.)

...there is no fandom in this post. Okay!

Pretend for a minute that the only contact you have ever had with me is through my fic. We've never exchanged LJ comments or emails, never hung out in chat or on AIM, never talked on the phone or met each other in person, none of that stuff. The only thing you know about me is the kind of fic I write. What kind of person would you think I am? How would you describe my attitudes and opinions about real-life issues?

I walked home today to find a dozen mochi plus a honey cake sitting innocently (but mysteriously) on the front porch. They're from an Asian bakery on Route 27 -- the box is extremely attractive -- and there's no note, so I have no idea why they were delivered.

While I have your attention, downloads!

Yukikaze/Gradius AMV
Another thing that appeared mysteriously, this time in my music folder. I must have downloaded this while on an NMHK kick, but not watched it since I didn't know the series -- and now that I do know it's pretty funny how un-Yukikaze-like this is. [livejournal.com profile] falxumbra is probably right when she says that the editor was only looking for high-quality dogfight footage, and didn't care which show he got it from. Great video, though.

The Pirates of Darkwater Comic
This is from the late eighties/early nineties, and it's awful. Worse than the G.I. Joe comics. Re-tells the first six or so episodes of the television series, minus the humor and plus gross anatomical errors like in this closeup of Ren:

Ewwwww. Now I'm all nostalgic; anyone know where I can get the television series?

Speaking of Pirates, I started reading One Piece yesterday! So far I'm not impressed, and whenever I ask someone (meaning, again, [livejournal.com profile] falxumbra) what's so great about this series, I get an avoidant answer. But that's okay, because I also hear it only gets better, and if I had to explain what makes Hunter x Hunter so great I probably wouldn't be able to either.

New layout! Now that Passover has come and gone, I figured it was time to ditch the winter colors. The new colorscheme is not particularly spring-like, but it's pretty and I like it.

Edit: mochi = boring. I knew they wouldn't be very sweet, but at least an interesting filling or...I don't know, something.

At least one person totally called the ending orz. I like the next chapter even less than I like this one, but the chapter after that I am actually looking forward to.

I'm in Massachussettes! In [livejournal.com profile] falxumbra's dorm room, specifically. She brought me to her roleplaying club's annual convention, where I learned how to make character sheets and roll dice and also that I... really like pen-and-paper roleplaying. (SHOCK! You're all surprised, I can tell. -_-; the real question is why I hadn't played before, I mean I have a total D&D -type personality.)

Wsssszzzzzggggggttttt <-- this is the sound of my non-geek, non-gamer socialization skills atrophying, not that I ever had too many of those in the first place ahaha.

Speaking of gaming! [livejournal.com profile] v_voltaire just bought a PS2, and she is asking for suggestions for games that are "rpgs that don't get boring/convoluted/overly angsty, twitch-based games that don't involve platform-jumping or precision work (I have seriously bad reflexes when it comes to that), and things that are funny. I'm the type who tends to powergame for a weekend and then not touch the thing for a few months."

Videogame recs, copy-paste from comments )

What you can mostly tell from this list is that I haven't played any new video games in like three years. XD also, selection was limited by the fact that my favorite videogame genre is jumping platformers (I also like racing games).
