Yes... Seven years after I drifted away from fandom, working way too hard as a long term sub and then new teacher at various urban schools to have the energy for anything besides going home and watching YouTube bullet planner videos and maybe commenting on omonatheydidnt.. I'm officially back in fandom, *and* involved enough to be a moderator on a fandom exchange!

The zine I'm in is an all-ratings Killugon (Killua/Gon from Hunter x Hunter) zine, so we are right in the eye of the fandom culture wars, haha. I liked a bunch of the contributors from AO3 and figured it would be a good way to make fandom friends on tumblr, and it worked :D It's actually my first zine in 15 years in fandom, unless you count the Death Note doujinshi telophase drew based on a script we wrote together back in 2005, so that's exciting too.

Yeah!!! It's been a lot of fun actually, though man, the culture shock was pretty severe at first XD. The way some of these social media sites are set up really makes it a whole lot easier for bad actors to spread misinformation.

I actually made a lot of new fandom friends... at my age! But also, I'm just so thankful for the strength of these old LiveJournal friendships, that they could become IRL friendships and even after almost seven years incommunicado, I can still email Ka and crash on her couch, or message you and still be considered a friend <3.

Oh, awesome! I don't really have roots here on dreamwidth anymore, and it would be awesome to get the word out to the old guard of fandom, who 1) aren't as judgmental about sexy stuff in fanworks, and 2) might have some disposable income. XD.

And by this I mean good to see you Subdee :) I'm not at all following anything fannish, but my now (oh god) 9yo just mainlined my DeathNote volumes so I looked at the new one and just no. no no no no. Ohhhh yeah, the new trend among the teens is to uncritically repeat/reblog rightwing talking points about how fans who do sexy fanworks of teen characters are pedophiles. I miss fandom wank man, there's no central place now to expose these people as trolls :P.

I actually haven't read the new Death Note chapter yet, hearing that Trump is in it makes me sad :( Though Obata being a supporter(?) - if that's what's in the chapter - is somehow not surprising, because he's always been a crazy mofo.

Yup. And I actually feel incredibly vindicated that after mainlining Death Note, Jake said that it got ridiculous and derivative (well, he actually said annoying, truth be told) after L got killed off. So yeah, it's not just the fandom hive who thought that it was completely pointless to reinvent the same characters over and over. Also! Jake said that girls in Death Note were way more annoying than they are in real life and that was making the story a lot less interesting. I personally chose to take it as a step forward from his current girls (with the notable exception of me (ha!) and his buddy F.) have cooties stage towards ...dare i say progressive thinking?

Woah that's awesome. Sounds like you are doing a great job as a parent :D And Thank You Obata for being such an obvious misogynist that even a 9yo who thinks girls have cooties can see the problem with the representation, I guess XD.

And to talk a bit about the reactionaries on tumblr, these are exactly the conversations that they don't trust parents to be having with their kids. We can have "bad" representation in media as long as the parents are involved, you know?

I know what you mean about roots -- I fell out of most fandom connections myself, and then stayed out, which hasn't really been a bad thing. But even I've heard about the purity backlash hitting fanworks, which is... surreal? To know that fandom/fic/etc has become so mainstream that now it's getting its own wave of counter-reactions? I'm glad fandom is more accepted socially, but frustrated that by doing so, its presence is taken for granted.

But on the other hand, there remain those good connections and memories, which I'm grateful for -- yourself included. :D The second your icon showed up again on my timeline, I went 'hey it's sub_divided!!' haha. It's nice to know that folks are still around being chill, even as time moves on. I still have good memories of our LJ conversations and fic discussions, and that time you helped me out while I was trying to find mp3s years and years ago. Those are the memories that I'm happy to keep, even if I drift completely away from fandom one day. :)

In the meantime, AO3 tells me I'm at 264 stories (not including the drabbles and side pieces that never made it up) and I'm 90% of the way to #265, so if/when I go radio silent for a bit, you know what I'm head-down in. ;)

Yeah, Being In Fandom is a mainstream thing now... it's still kind of wild to think about XD. So all the people who are interested in what The Youth are Doing Online are getting all up in this, and seeing a lot of success in pushing their agenda under the guise of being progressive sadly.

What mp3 thing was that, again? ^^;; My memory is terrible, lol. I remember when you gave me a bunch on feedback on my Loveless AMV, which no longer exists anywhere on the internet or on any harddrives, so I guess it's lost forever aha (probably a good and bad thing).

Yes, please feel free to spread the tumblr link! We need about 18 more orders. The backlash is really strong in HxH fandom, or maybe people just aren't interested in a ship zine for canon 11-14 year olds. :P It's not like anyone will know if you buy a zine if you don't tell anyone you bought it, but also, it's a bit pricey for people to buy just to make a statement when you can find a lot of ship art and writing, for free, online.

Selfishly, I want a full color version in my grubby hands to brag that I am in it, though. XD.

It was the Mushishi soundtrack! Which still remains some of my favorite music of all time, and has often made it back into my car playlists. Over the years, every time I've dug out the mp3s, I have literally said to myself, 'thank goodness for sub_d', I'm not kidding.

You say this BUT I went back and checked my archives, and I actually have BOTH versions of your video still. Which 1. tells you something about the dusty state of my archives, and 2. the timestamps on them are 2006, so that means they've been hanging around on my hard drives for fourteen years at least wtf

And they're still playable! So let me know if you want me to upload copies to Google Drive so you can grab them, or if you'd rather back away from this reminder of the past. :)

As for writing, I'd probably have even more fics by now, but fell into doing longfics pretty chronically... so instead of nice, tidy 3-5k pieces, there are these 15-40k monstrosities floating around. They serve a purpose too, so it's all good -- I just wish they weren't so time consuming. Either way, I still get a lot of satisfaction in simply continuing to create content regardless of fandom, length, or even audience, so that will probably never go away.

Speaking of which, I'm about to go head-down in the last stretch of this one fic (14k, I weep), but hit me up if you have any other links you want me to share, or want me to upload the amvs. :)

Fanfics seem to be getting longer,in general.. I feel like people who just wanna talk to other people about canon without doing a lot of world building or anything just make memes or do hot takes now, and the people who are writing still are mostly doing it because they enjoy writing for the sake of writing. I dunno if that makes sense or not, the quality over all seems a lot higher now tho XD.

Happy to help! :) It's kind of a miracle that they survived, what with all the various computer migrations over the years (before these days of debatable cloud storage.) But I'm very glad they did :)

That's true about fic getting longer, and I agree with you there -- there are more avenues for shorter flashfic too, I guess, between Twitter and Tumblr (if that even still is happening after the purge.) With fandom being more accepted, the ways to celebrate it are spreading out too maybe, with more ways to share art and forms of fan merchandise (keychains!) and so it's easier to stay involved in your love for fandom without sticking to only writing if it's not your thing. Maybe? haha. Either way, it's nice to see the richness around us... hopefully that will never go away. :)

I think the fic is getting longer because we're all turning into content producers, and we all have more competition now. You gotta stand out if you want an audience, XD. But it's also true that fandom's more accepted and we don't live in fear of lawsuits anymore, haha. And hosting images and making and selling merch is of course much easier.
