Clay
1) Do you have siblings or are you an only child?
Yes, I have one younger brother. He's 4.5 years younger than me, meaning that we never attended the same school at the same time. We fight a lot but generally get along, but he causes my Mom and I a lot of stress/worry. He and I are different in pretty much every imaginable way. My brother wants to be a K-pop star -_-.
2) Since you obviously love food, what's you favorite food to eat and what's your favorite dish to cook?
If I were a computer and this was fed to me as question, I would be locked at "Calculating ..." and 100% CPU utilization. Or maybe, "Insufficient Input -- please enter the required fields and try again". Within which cuisine? Savory or sweet? Which meal? If I were to list all my favorite foods things to eat it would take at least an hour. [Subdee note: More like a day.]
Cooking is easier: my specialties are vegetable stir fry, garlic-parmesan-pepper mashed potatoes, deviled eggs, and shepherd's pie (the last two for fancy occasions).
3) Who is your favorite author and why?
I don't really have favorite author(s); I mostly have favorite books. The vast majority of authors don't put out work consistent enough for me to favor one over the other; plus, past performance is not a guarantee of future results, and all that right? XD The last favorite authors I remember having were Roald Dahl/Dr. Seuss, and the most consistent (living) writers I know of are generally not authors (e.g. Nicholas Kristoff, Dave Barry, John Paul Stevens, Antonin Scalia (he is evil but damn is he persuasive)). That being said, I'm told I recommend works by Ursula Le Guin to other people more frequently than any other author. For such a decorated author, she's still relatively unknown (outside LJ/DW anyway -- subdee tells me she's very popular in these circles). Some of her short stories are terrible, but a lot of them are really good, and when it comes to believably portraying alien cultures, no one else comes close.
My favorite humorous poem is With Sincerest Regrets.
4) How would you describe yourself in 5 words?
Tragicomic heroine, suffer pain and die!!!!! (..."and" doesn't count).
5) What is usually the first thing you notice about someone when meeting them for the first time?
Generally, how they talk, and how nice I think they are. The latter may or may not be correlated to how closely they adhere to the popular girl/jock guy standard. I think I interpret the results of that observation differently depending on whether that person is a girl or a guy, but that's a whole 'nother story.
6) What's the first thing you noticed about S.?
Haha, probably the fact that she offered me food and helped me find something to order at Seoul Garden. (See, "How we met"). Subsequently, the fact that we were having a good conversation about non-trivial subjects ... and then it was like, wow this girl is cute and almost exactly my type; pretty dark eyes & dark hair <3 XDDD
7) Name some hip hop artists with a conscience because I'm looking for new music, but am generally put off by the content in hip hop. Well, not only in hip hop. I'm put off by just plain stupid lyrics, too. ^^
You know, I totally understand where you're coming from. It's sad because there is *a lot* of amazing, intelligent hip hop out there that just doesn't get radio play for some reason, even though the content is on par with (I would say better than) the best spoken poetry out there; people have a bias against it as an art form, for some reason. Artists .... well, when I listen to hip hop, I usually listen to it by song and not by artist, since most non-mainstream artists actually have a very diverse repertoire / discography, by topic. The same artist may rap about politics one minute and then, you know, a graphic bedroom scene the next. Also, from what I can tell, concept albums are pretty popular for rap artists, which means they'll put out something that seems totally OOC both musically and lyrically.
Artists I know of that put out the most consistent clean, positive content would be the likes of Talib Kweli, Black Star (Mos Def & Talib Kweli collaboration), Blue Scholars, Common Market ... I'm probably remiss in not mentioning The Roots or Common, but I just don't feel their songs for some reason! Lupe Fiasco is a personal favorite of mine, because he's this really great combination of technique (great flow and delivery) and intelligent lyrics that reference topics from anime to Greek mythology to child soldiers to street life in the ghetto. Stylistically, I really like Chali 2na and Q-Tip ... and of course everyone loves 2pac.
I'd be happy to give a song-by-song recommendation breakdown, but I don't want to bore you to tears. XD
8) What do you like best about yourself? And what do you like the least?
Honestly, at this point in my life I don't tend to think of myself in those terms, because I think evaluating yourself in terms of what part of you is "the best" and what part of you is "the worst" really destabilizes a healthy self-image, and can turn into rollercoaster of arrogant highs and depressive lows. I will say that I am generally pleased about having a healthy body image, geeky inclinations that make so many topics interesting to me, and an ability to be honest to myself, about myself. I'm also very grateful for the sincerity that characterized many of my friendships, and think I'm very lucky in that regard. I would like to improve my ability to gracefully navigate casual social situations and defuse awkwardness, especially at non-geek gatherings, as well as my patience and work ethic/long-term organization skills.
Kara
How are you a defender of justice?
Um, I don't really know ^^; This is subdee's term, probably because it makes me sound like an anime character? Aki and Subdee have both respectively said that I am drawn to "the emotionally crippled" (lol thanks Aki =P ... haha I'm misquoting her a little) and "small, helpless things--or hapless in my case". More generally, they're probably referring to the remnants from my youthful delusions of knighthood and princedom. -_- Honestly, that's gotten me into more trouble than it's worth .... Ahhhhh, Subdee take over!
[subdee note: Okay okay, I will take over. :) One of the first things R told me about herself - and I think I mentioned this in an email to Clay - is that when she was younger, she wanted to BE Utena - of the anime Revolutionary Girl Utena - and go around rescuing "princesses, kittens, puppies, little boys who are picked on", etc. So that's probably why.]

So R would be at home on Dreamwidth?
I don't think so. I'm not very good at concentrated long posts. I wouldn't be able to muster the focused attention necessary for ongoing long-form blog posts, not to mention being able to maintain proper etiquette for the comment/response culture. My approach is more hit and run ("guerrilla" style =P). The only thing that could inspire me to post on a regular basis would be a food blog. And then it would just turn into a catalogue of delicious/crappy things that I ate today. I prefer short bursts of words, (partially explains why I like poetry).
