It's not just the fifth day of the fifth month--the date is 05/05/05. A sign!

Hikago fic-writing is going to eat my brain, I can tell. The series is alright, mainly notable for not assigning super-human abilities to any of the characters (except Sai, who isn't human anyway). But the possibilities for fic are endless! I can write something entirely based on parallels between go-philosophy and life-philosophy and only stick in the characters as an afterthought! Do you know how many go-proverbs can be given a completely out of context greater significance?* And go-research is unbelievably addicting, you should all read Pieter Mioch's articles at http://gobase.org.** I have to apologize to [livejournal.com profile] svz_insanity, because she asked for Shindou/Touya but the closest I'll be able to get is using Shindou to add depth to an Akira character study which is really about the connections between mindset and playing style and upbringing, and I've never been very good at hiding my intentions so it will probably be completely obvious too.***

It's debatable how many people will actually want to read fanfic written like this. If all I'm doing is merging Go articles with Hikago characters I might as well copy the articles over with name changes, which would be more accurate anyway since I've never played go.

Footnotes are longer than the actual entry:
*This reminds me Quantum Mechanics. According to the author of my textbook, one of the worst things you can do to Quantum is treat it as something profound (because it's the result of a set of equations, not a philosophy). But I am so so so guilty of this. I really shouldn't be a physics major, I'm not temperamentally suited to it.

**Most of these prompt for a password, but you can get around this by temporarily disabling your internet connection. This one is particularly good, it's an interview with Hane Yasumasa about the differences between Korean and Japanese professional Go.

***Touya is more interesting than Hikaru. I'm still waiting to find an OTP where I can love both characters equally, because otherwise it turns into me using the character I like less to characterize the one I like more, which really isn't fair to the first character. While I'm on the subject of Touya Akira, does anyone else think he's massively mischaracterized in Hikago fanfic? He's this... persnickety, neurotic guy, and I just don't see that at all. He's fastidious at the most. You have to be purposefully seeking to impose order on your surroundings to be neurotic. Touya's more naturally self-contained, he doesn't impose on others. And persnickety is even worse because it implies a lack of ability or helplessness when dealing with situations not to your liking, and how could Touya even play Go if that were the case? Obviously he couldn't; the most fundamental skill of high-level Go is the ability to adapt to unexpected situations. I'm not sure how well I'm expressing this, but when I read a fic where Touya is thrown completely off-balance by an off-hand remark (or Shindou's messy room), I have to wonder if the author and I are reading the same manga. Of course, the anime might be different.

All of which is to say, I got a manageable number of requests so I think I'll do something more substantial with them than drabbles. Except for [livejournal.com profile] darkeyedwolf's, because her prompt sucked♥. It might take longer, but they'll all be done eventually. In the meantime, requests are still open if I haven't scared you off with all the *waves hands vaguely* stuff in this entry.

In addition to everything else I think I need to do Death Note fanart celebrating the fact that if L=Left and Raito=Right then Misa=Middle. If someone else wants to draw the three of them sitting in that order on a couch watching a horror movie and L has the popcorn and his legs drawn up and is completely absorbed, and Raito is leaning on his left elbow on the sofa's other arm with his fingers half-covering his face, his right arm (with the handcuff) along the back of the couch, and Misa is between them pretending to be frightened so she can cling to Light's sweater, that would really make my day. Bonus points if the television screen casts an eerie glow across their faces.
