Even if no one else is watching this show AT LEAST I STILL HAVE [livejournal.com profile] fiendery.

Episodes 10-12, reposted from comments to Eru's blog )

And:

Episodes 13-14 )

P.S.

Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicle Chapter 159: WHY SO CONVOLUTED. Spoiler, highlight to read:

So Fai's first curse is that he must kill anyone powerful enough to undo the curse he's under, and his second curse is that he must aid and escort Princess Sakura until she reaches Clow Country, and kill anyone who might impede them -- including Syaoran and Kurogane (note emphasis is CLAMP's not mine)?

This...actually makes sense? As a workable Fei Wong Reed plan, I mean. What's throwing me off is the way CLAMP keeps putting the emphasis on Fai's trauma, as if the reason Fei Wong Reed chose these particular curses was to torment him. That wouldn't make sense since, Dreamgazer or no, there was no way Fei Wong could have known that Fai would become as attached to Syaoran and Kurogane as he did.

I really love that Kurogane was supposed to be Fei Wong Reed's pawn as well, but Yuuko intervened (though Tomoyo) and now he's Yuuko's pawn. I mean, just think about how Kurogane feels about Yuuko. *g*

In conclusion, all signs point to advance planning (was anyone besides [livejournal.com profile] v_voltaire interested in a community for re-reading Tsubasa at the rate of, say, two volumes a week?) but unnecessarily confused reveals sometimes obscure this fact.

Ghost Hunt

Ghost Hunt is an anime (and manga!) based on a series of YA novels by Fuyumi Ono, the author of Twelve Kingdoms, but of course I can't read those. ^^; I marathonned the anime on youtube. If I had to describe the premise in one line, it would be:

"So a Catholic priest, a Shinto priestess, an ex-monk from Mount Kouya, a Chinese omyouji, a television medium, a clairvoyant and a paranormal investigator walk into a haunted house, and..."

XD. There's really nothing special here, but it's cute and kind of fun. What I really like is that the supernatural elements are (mostly) understated. Ghosts register as a 5-to-10-degree drop in temperature, exorcisms are plain and not flashy, clients who come by say things like: "We've had reports of strange noises at the site, and one guy said he saw a table move across the floor by itself this one time. Since we started construction, we've had to stop three times due to mysterious accidents, though thankfully no one was badly hurt, but could you investigate?"

In other words, clients -- and witnesses, once Shibuya Psychic Research has arrived on-scene -- all tell normal ghost stories, the kind you can actually believe might be real. From there events might escalate, or they might not, but Ghost Hunt never strays too far from the every-day. (...This would probably have been even better if I believed in ghosts. XD;)

Other bonuses: Mai, the main character, is adorable. *g* And I like the other characters too. (Except John who has NO personality...and Naru, after the first arc ends and the animators forget to keep reminding you about his horrible personality, comes across more blank and robotic than high-handed and overly impressed with himself, which are the character flaws he's supposed to have.)

Drawbacks: Generic storylines. (Haunted house, haunted school, haunted seaside resort...the draw is in the execution, not the premise.) Low budget. (They couldn't even afford animated snow for the Christmas episode!) Very low target age group. (You can see places where the anime could have been disturbing, but the darkness was reigned in so as not to scare away any seven year olds who might have been watching.) Slow, slow, slow. (Seriously, it's SLOW.)

And the final drawback is that the show ends in a way that had me going NEED FANFICTION RIGHT OH MY GOD WHERE IS THE FANFICTION, but tragically, I couldn't find decent fic! Not anywhere! ;_; My standards aren't high, (no really), so if you know of any place that has even okay stuff please leave a comment, I am desperate and I will love you forever. *_*

(I even tried reading the manga, since that has storylines beyond what was animated, but in the end I had to give up. The manga is confusing -- I couldn't tell who was saying what, or even what they were supposed to be saying, in key scenes. I guess it's not easy paneling for a series that is 90% characters standing around talking to each other, but really, the artist/script editor ought to have been able to have done a better job than that.)

Adaption )

I've had the idea for this story for the longest time. And by "this story," I don't mean the village ^^;;; I mean the letter exchange. Actually, when I was watching Mushishi as it was airing, there was a point -- before any other mushishi had shown up in episodes -- when I thought every mushishi was like Ginko, a magnet for mushi. Ergo, no two mushishi could spend too much time together, because if they were together, the mushi-attracting effect would be magnified, and before long they'd be fending off mushi with sticks.

The original form of this story was: Ginko and another mushishi, who have never met face-to-face, communicate via letters buried near a certain roadside shrine. Ginko often sleeps outdoors because large towns aren't safe -- another mushishi he isn't aware of might also be staying the night. This time he decides to sleep near this shrine. He finds a comfortable spot on the lee side of a large rock.

The next morning, Ginko wakes up, and only then notices that on the other side the rock, there's another person. This person is, of course, a mushishi -- the same mushishi with whom he'd been exchanging letters. The two of them stare at each other a moment, and then they notice that they're both covered in small, glowing, firefly-like mushi. They only have time to introduce themselves before they're forced to take off running in opposite directions.

I thought about writing this for tin's correspondence challenge, but by that point another mushishi had shown up in canon. ^^;;

Coming down with performance anxiety in the case of school papers was bad enough, why am I worrying about the literary value of livejournal posts?! Note to self, knock it off.

I'm in New Jersey right now trying to iron things out with Rutgers University. If all goes well, I'll finish up my degree here in the Fall. (Latest Status of Degree: After this semester I'll be two credits short. Two natural science credits. Arrrrrrggggggh!)

Books read: Nine. More on this later.
Movies seen: Two (Daywatch, Ratatouille) so far with another (Transformers) coming up on Wednesday. Looking forward to finally meeting [livejournal.com profile] asprosdrakos in person!

Daywatch: The second movie in an epic fantasy trilogy and I wonder whether not having seen Nightwatch actually made this movie better. The basic plot is that there are two kinds of supernatural beings living in our world, one side (the "Dark" ones) is made up of Vampires and Witches and the like while the other side (the "Light" ones) is made up mostly of Psychics, Seers, etc. The two sides were at war many, many years ago, but sometime around the Middle Ages they struck a truce, and have been uneasily at peace ever since.Read more... )

In conclusion, Daywatch-the-movie is awesome and I totally recommend it.

Ratatouille: I talked to Julie before I saw this and she assured me that it didn't do the "because you are a human, it's all right for you to profit from the hard work of a lowly rat" thing. And boy was she right. ^^; Ratatouille really doesn't do that at all. I thought it was cute and that the characters were endearing and that the rats were well-animated, and I loved the ending, even if it would never work outside of a family movie.

Theater report: the kids all loved the rats and the adults all loved Anton Ego, the food critic. ^^; He was hilarious. His room looked like a coffin from above.

I haven't had a computer for the last three weeks, but really that's only an excuse. Must resume status as a productive member of society the internet!

Re computer: The power adapter for my laptop went out and since then I've been waiting, first for a new AC/DC adapter, then for a second AC/DC adapter, then for a box to put my laptop in and send off to HQ and fix the problems caused by the first (faulty) adapter. Right now I'm waiting for my laptop to come back.

In the meantime I've been...reading? ^^; And avoiding responsibilities. I met [livejournal.com profile] harumi! We talked for hours and hours. ^_^v I'm meeting her in about another hour and a half so this entry might be cut short.

...And I've been playing FFXII. (Aha! The truth comes out!). Fun game, far too long. I'm at something crazy like 80 hours and still no end in sight.

FFXII, totally disorganized )

Off to dinner! And then: swing dancing!

I thought I'd left questionable content behind when I moved on from Loveless fandom, but considered through WFI-colored glasses Saimono has a lot of questionable content too. I don't just mean the usual gay subtext -- in this case gay canon -- but specifically incest, pedophilia, and pedophilic incest. (HELLO REISHIN I AM LOOKING AT YOU.) Which isn't to say that Saimono is actually questionable, only that everything looks different when you've got perverts on the brain.

Anyway, that's not really what I wanted to talk about. My parents have been making noise about wanting to see my "writing".

...

Ahhhhhhh! What can I show them? What do I do? I've never written anything original! I barely write fanfiction anymore! I do want to show them something because, well, it's a hobby, and I don't necessarily think it's an illegitimate hobby, and my parents never ask about my hobbies. But. Fanfiction. ;_;

As I see it, I have four options: Under the cut, avoiding-actually-writing-anything-new acrobatics )

In other news: I had a blast with [livejournal.com profile] apintrix in New York[1]; Paprika is weird, but cool[2]; I like Darker Than Black but I'm starting to worry that the eventual explanation won't make any more sense than the current ominous foreshadowing[3]; The Devil would be perfect if only the directors didn't kill approximately half the air time slow-panning across the faces of three main characters[4]; the Veronica Mars series finale was awesome[5]; and I finally know which classes I'm taking this summer[6].

[1] NEXT TIME LET'S GET ICE CREAM TOO.

[2]Full of exactly those parts of Japanese pop culture that always make the headlines -- no wonder Satoshi Kon's movies export so well -- the plot follows several scientists' attempts to recover the "DS-Mini," an experimental dream therapy device that causes havoc in the wrong hands. There were subplots in this movie that could practically have stood alone as main plots (though admittedly, those movies would probably not have been very good). The detective was kind of a boring character -- or I should say, a very normal character -- so I was glad when he and At-chan...oops, that's a spoiler. Above all it's visually amazing, well worth $10 to see on a big screen.

[3] But the main character is a dead-eyed psychic assassin! All the women fall for him! *in love*

[4] And I'll be honest, only the cop is really "acting" in this, so the pans don't really show the characters giving each other meaningful looks as much as they hover over blank expressions while the music swells meaningfully. The problem might also be that the past event that connects the three of them wasn't set up very well. The problem might also be that only the cop is an active character -- the other two make sense, more or less, but they aren't advancing the action. (Kang Sunbae is my favorite character, obviously.)

[5] "It's like I'm back in high school." <-- exactly

[6] Intro to Statistics and a Drawing class. For distribution. I'm, um, back to being a Physics major.

Another Saiunkoku ficlet, another one-line joke.

Reishin, Kurou, Shouka )

XDXDXD

I kind of want to expand on the "Kurou hates Shouka because Shouka turns Reishin, whom Kurou admires, into a babbling idiot" theme, but I'm not sure what else to say besides "Kurou hates Shouka because Shouka etc".

Lunch!

British fantasy author Dianna Wynne Jones is the theme for the second issue of Maybe Sparrow and I just finished two DWJ paperbacks last week. Good timing. :D One was Unexpected Magic, a collection of early short stories which I have volunteered to review minus the novella Everard's Ride. The other was Conrad's Fate.

Conrad's Fate )

And I said I'd do Unexpected Magic without Everard's Ride but I seem to have written an 800-word essay on Everard's Ride and it's passably formal-literary so can I ask a favor? Are any of you willing to look it over? Mostly for style and then I'll email the re-written review to Tin (more than a month early, shock gasp horror.)

You know what it is, I've been so paralyzed by the weight of so many missed deadlines -- for schoolwork, fanwork, even housework -- that I've just been hanging on to the things I do have, waiting for the perfect time to finish them. Or even the perfect time to post what's already finished.

Take this Kankuro thing.

Series: Naruto
Title: The one where Kankuro gets drunk in a bar
Genre: Drunken Ranting
Note: Originally for this request (oh my god, that thread is two years old).

No time like the present? )

Doesn't it have that just-dusted-off feel? orz
