<3 my brother, he’s one of the few people I can talk with “seriously” about anime/manga and not feel embarrassed. Usually these conversations end in either mumbles or giggling or a hasty change of subject. XDDD although aside from CLAMP our circles don’t really intersect:

Him: If it can’t be described as “fantasy”, “romance”, “comedy”, or “shoujo” I don’t want to hear about it. Also, I HATE space series and anything with a pop/techno soundtrack.
Me: Ummm.

We’re in Montreal right now, having already been through Windsor, Toronto, and Kingston. That is, like, a LOT of driving but fortunately I have always been able to read in the car. Confession: I'm reading Memoirs of a Geisha mostly for [livejournal.com profile] iserlohn’s “Annrose” drabble challenge. XD;;; I was going to save it for the end of the summer, but given that Annrose (Legend of the Galactic Heroes) is pretty much a glorified bedmate? Seemed appropriate.

([livejournal.com profile] iserlohn, btw, is brilliant. The name is brilliant, the point system is brilliant, and the people are so brilliant that reading them makes me want to give up the internet and become a hermit and never write again. ^^;; I can never entirely shake this feeling, but I can ignore it just long enough to hit the “post” button.

Speaking of : four drabbles @ iserlohn, “Annrose” challenge.)

• livejournal isn't recognizing tags with spaces in them. It's the first thing in the suggestions que and they say they're working on it, so no need to change all your spaces_into_underscores just yet.

While I am on the subject of LOGH and original characters and sci-fi withdrawal and all that good shit, I have TWO PAGES OF SPECULATION on the discovery and scientific basis of ARTIFICIAL GRAVITY. Complete with plucky band of MULTIRACIAL SCIENTISTS who PREVENT THE LOCALIZED COLLAPSE OF SPACE when system is first developed (Galactic Union Era). Because this system goes on SPACESHIPS, and it POWERS THE SPACESHIPS (also other things) and that's why they never need to refuel -- perpetual energy machines! I love the future. But I was thinking, WOULDN'T THAT BE A BIT LIKE A NUCLEAR SUBMARINE? People are shooting at these ships and they are exploding in BALLS OF FIRE (in space! 0:), and meanwhile somewhere in the hold is a machine that produces and directs fundamental high-energy particles at a nearly continuous rate. This seems like a bad combination to me.

I'd fic it for real except this raises the fundamental question, "When is fic still fic? When it has absolutely no relation to the original series except common sci-fi elements and a timeline?"

[livejournal.com profile] tarigwaemir tagged me for the top 20 OTPs meme. In two categories and the order they occured to me: )

tagging: [livejournal.com profile] pally_pally, [livejournal.com profile] pellaz, [livejournal.com profile] mistressrenet, [livejournal.com profile] darkeyedwolf, [livejournal.com profile] rondaview, [livejournal.com profile] v_voltaire, veradicere. I get that many because at least one of you has no doubt already done this meme, and at least one of you will no doubt refuse to.

• I'm leaving Saturday morning for a Canadian college-tour-cum-mini-vacation (Windsor! Toronto! Montreal! Quebec City! My little brother is growing up!). I'll be back, ummm, call it a week from today.

The thing is, I started typing this fic 9:00pm yesterday thinking I could finish it in three hours (for the August 11 [livejournal.com profile] 31_days prompt I claim proud kinship with your race and blood). Unfortunately it is now 7:04 am August 12 (and really, I knew I wasn't going to make it when the first sentence in my notebook turned into four paragraphs on the computer). I dunno, maybe I'll post for man or astroman instead? Because hey, there's outer space! Close enough. We'll see how I feel about it when I haven't been up for 30 hours straight.

Title: Anomaly
Series: Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Genre: Bad science fiction with political overtones

LOGH fans, before/if you read this I must warn you: THERE ARE NO RECOGNIZABLE CHARACTERS. ONLY ORIGINAL.

Remember: I claim proud kinship with your race and blood. That part's important. )

In case anyone is wondering, here is the beginning of what I would have been using for man or astoman if I wasn't spending the rest of today (August 12) packing my stuff and cleaning out the appartment (AHHHHH).

Series: Hikago

***
Reiishi approaches him after the match with congratulations, and to ask how he developed his extrodinary presense of mind at such a young age.

"Playing you, I sensed an enormous mental pressure. It was as if I came against a crushing force, and I felt I'd be swept away -- literally flattened. I've experienced such things before, but never from anyone with less than ten years of professional experience."

"Really?" Hikaru said. "I didn't notice."
***

>_< the idea is that developing the ability to block out a voice in his own head has given Hikaru scary amounts of concentration, which fazes his oppenents in much the same way Touya's intensity fazed Hikaru at first. It's appropriate to the theme because astroman = space man = New Type = human with extrodinary mental powers. Man vs Astroman, yes? =_= or maybe I just need more sleep.

A million years ago [livejournal.com profile] svz_insanity requested AkiHika. But, umm, this isn't it. It's gen. Focus on Go, about which I know nothing. But hey! [livejournal.com profile] 31_days! Except I'm not crossposting because it's underdeveloped and I don't like it very much.

EDIT somewhat expanded, thanks guys!

Series: Hikaru no Go
Genre: chracterization-through-board-game
Summary: white VS black

Okay! I wouldn't have done this except that I was challenged and, unlike those self-absorbed, hedonistic Court cronies, we supporters of the Free Planets have both a greater sense of justice and the moral obligation force our beliefs onto other people.

In response to [livejournal.com profile] v_voltaire's Why the Empire is awesome and deserves to overcome those foolish rebels (SPOILERS to 40 because v_voltaire is very cruel):

Reasons you should support the Free Planets Alliance in its never-ending struggle again Tyranny and Oppression (spoilers to episode 40) )

ende challange. (OT: Prince of Tennis made me attempt serious tennis for the first time in six years; Hikaru no Go made me attempt Go for the first time in ten years. Legend of the Galactic Heroes...makes me want to go back to being a History major. >_<;; )

By the time you read this entry, I will have already completed the anime known as Initial D: First Stage.

Thoughts as the series progresses )

There’ll probably be another post tonight. I’m in a spammy mood.

V says I should use this icon for this post, because it is completely inappropriate. Okay!

(But, but! This icon WILL NEVER be appropriate, because I am never in a “creepy, old, wannabe-immortal child-molester” mood. So if in a few weeks you stumble back across this entry, and see only my default icon here, it will be because not even [livejournal.com profile] riko’s SUPAH SPECIAL icon-making skills were enough to justify giving Orochimaru his own slot.)

First of all: Hunter x Hunter Musical (The Nightmare of Zaoldyeck), Part 2 of 2 (edit: taken down.)

Sorry this wasn’t up yesterday. The University network was down-then-up-then-down-again this weekend. It was down part of Friday too -- it does that sometimes, maybe thanks to all of the engineers (and me!) using their one gigabyte of complementary webspace to engage in bandwidth-intensive illegalities. XD. But at least I know I don’t have to worry about getting in trouble for it, not on a campus whose second television station is dedicated to playing just-released DVDs.

I’ve been admiring this meme from afar for a while now, so: FIVE WAYS IN WHICH I AM A DORK )

IF YOU HAVE DONE THE “ASK ME MY TOP FIVE ANYTHING” MEME, COULD YOU PLEASE COMMENT HERE WITH A LINK? I’ve been seriously busy all weekend, only found time to upload the musical and download Initial D (♥♥♥ Chrissy). But I love this meme.

Finished that Death Note fic -- Theoretically. Light VS L, old skool style. What I would most like to know is, are the parentheses too much? They were a temporary measure until I decided I liked them. Now I'm afraid they've taken over the fic.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] sesame_seed. Her summary is a thing of beauty, and also she is a saint/pimp for offering the episodes for download, so leave her a comment! Chrissy, I got past my initial hesitation and now I am eagerly awaiting the next installment. I just hope it won’t have any actual combat in it. (I love this series, really I do. But it’s about genius military strategists and their strategies aren’t really genius, more like translations into space of standard 18th century troop formations. This didn’t bother me when I was reading the manga since I was free to skim or skip, but sitting down to watch twenty minutes of adequacy? Or, if it isn’t Yang or Siegfried or Reinhard on screen, incompetence? I want to yell at my computer screen, outer space has three dimensions! Use them, you morons! …fortunately the space battles aren’t really the point.)

Victorian Romance Emma manga and anime, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] octopedingue. Come on, laugh at the title with me! Emma has no relation to Jane Austen’s Emma except that they live in approximately the same time period and deal with approximately the same subject (romance). You should skip the anime and download the manga, which is ten million times better. The manga moves faster, is more uniquely drawn, and best of all does not make the main love interest into an uninteresting wussy boy. Instead he’s an irresponsible wussy boy, haha. But endearing! Mostly, though, my love goes to Prince Hakim in all of his stock exotic, oversexed oriental, spoiled aristocrat, opium-addict glory.

[livejournal.com profile] darkeyewolf has plotbunnies up for adoption! Good ones, too -- I almost feel like writng Hikaru/Sai now. Almost.

But, but. Ryoma’s bilingualism? I dunno, man. Lots of people are bilingual. In fact why don’t I make a poll:
[Poll #541725]

XD I’ll feel really stupid if everyone says no. In any case we can probably say he spoke Japanese at home, or else he’d have had a much harder time with the move. (With his mother, since Nanjiroh's Japanese would only have been good for tennis terms and insults (and only because "there aren't as many good insults in English"), probably.)

I was looking around my harddrive for new icons to upload, and found this:

Haha inside joke with [livejournal.com profile] falxumbra. She’s coming to see me this weekend! Rock on!!

Back from Fermilab, feeling disjointed. Putting off cleaning my apartment, which I so totally have to do before company shows up tomorrow. M would freak out otherwise. (I’m not that bad! she says, but she has “perfectionist” in her AIM handle.)

It's the Art Fair! The city's been completely taken over. Art Fair is Ann Arbor inside-out: the town closes off all the streets, and the shops all open shop outside. "Artists" -- in quotes because it is mostly decorative art and jewerly, not so much gallery-bait -- come from all over the country to set up stalls. Friday and Saturday are the last two days.

Speaking of the Art Fair, I found out Tuesday night that my summer parking permit doesn’t cover it. “You are expected to remove your vehicle by 7:00am Wednesday, and not to return it until 10:00pm Saturday,” the notice in my mailbox said. -_- I wonder how much the tourists are paying my landlord. (Well, what would you do on such short notice? I drove my car out to the Ypsilanti supermarket parking lot and left it there.)

Hunter x Hunter Second Musical - The Nightmare of Zaoldyeck (Part 1 of 2) (edit: taken down)

From the HK DVDs. The quality is high, so I can only host one half at a time -- the second half will be up, first half down, a week from this Saturday. Download, download! It’s an elaboration of the episodes where Gon “rescues” Killua from his abusive assassin family.

Yes, and stick with it past the terrible opening number. Afterwards is much funnier. Very fanservice-y.

While on the subject of Hunter x Hunter downloads, on the singles collection CD there’s a duet between Mito and Hisoka and I would dearly like to know what they’re saying.

HxH Singles Collection (duet is “Yurete Kandagawa“ (sp?)) (edit: taken down)

Mito is Gon’s adoptive mother and Hisoka is the psychotic pedophile clown out for his ass. What could they possibly have to sing about? Really.

XD this was a good week for hxh downloads. Temporarily join [livejournal.com profile] hunterxhunter for a few more – first musical, other soundtracks. Or join permanently, maybe? It’s a cute low-traffic community. We’ll see whether this changes when (if?) the anime comes out in the States.
