I found a text file with as-I-was-watching commentary on The Wolf and the Spices -- which, you might remember, I wasn't very impressed by. I doubt any of you (besides [livejournal.com profile] severefun) have even seen this anime, but just in case:

1. Trading theme: It's not moeconomics, it's RPG econimics! XD Salt exchanged for pelts exchanged for coins, etc. I don't see Lawrence really risking everything to take advantage of changes in the market though; it's more like he picks up the newest thing at the towns he haphazardly travels through and makes a small profit each time. It's hard to see how he could profit like that, when the roads are perfectly safe and there are (church) soldiers everywhere.

2. The wolf girl = pagan goddess of wheat harvest theme is much better done especially since the new methods (plowing, field rotation) really have advantages...but there's something inexplicably attractive about the old methods (festivals, idol worship) as well.

3. Freaking myself out putting this on a timeline with Guns Germs and Steel, about a hundred pages of which is devoted to the rise and dominance of domestic wheat in east Eurasia. XD

4. This would be a better show with a stronger male lead! He has no personality.

5. And I kind of wish it was more medieval...in a more realistic show there would be no independent female traders living within a stone's throw of the Church.

6. On the other hand: yesss, inviting looks that are intentional! Those are some KNOWING looks and you really wonder what's Lawrence's problem...possibly, he remembers Chloe as a little girl, although he's not that much older than her.

7. Woah, Horo's actually very well-behaved. And protective. And unloved! Aw.

8. Ahem. She goes with him because HIS WHEAT STALKS ARE BIGGER. (Thank you, ladies and gentlemen!)

9. It's too bad there's no animation budget for this. It'd be nice to see some real medieval fields, towns, and clothings. And Lawrence would be more exciting if his character design were less generic. AND I'd really like to see more money put into Horo's facial expressions.

10. An Example of Lawrence's Mad Skillz: "Basically, I don't need to exchange any money to fulfil both of these contracts."

Okay, that's kind of fairly...

"This system is called bartering, it was invented by merchants to exchange goods between various regions."

...STUPID. -_- Arg, why am I still watching this.

11. I'm going to go out on a limb and say: this anime is BORING.

12. "You just need to work hard! When I first started out all merchants seemed like monsters to me!"

(Though in the original, without the exclamations. -_-; Honestly, trading is not a seniority game. You are not working your way up the corporate ladder, you are working for yourself. I could understand if Lawrence was like, super experienced, but he's only 25 -- which counted for more in medieval times, sure, but there are some forty and fifty year-olds on this show.)

13. Ahhhhh, I can't take it. I'll leave this one to the fanboys.
