It's hard to watch, of course, nothing but self-congratulatory speeches and minority guest speakers offering empty praise. Every time anyone says anything concrete, it's wrong. Or just one-sided. These conventions were never meant to please anyone but the campaign contributors, anyway.

CNN says that Democrats dislike John Kerry's (non)stance on the war. We supposedly want him to take a more black-and-white-out-for-blood approach. Which is true, but that was Howard Dean's spiel and it certainly didn't work for him. I'd personally settle for someone with convictions that somewhat match with mine.

On a lighter note, there's a livejournal community dedicated to slashing him and Edwards together: johnxjohn. And. That. is. SO. Wrong. Arg, why am I taking this all so seriously?! Must lighten up.

I've been trying to read Sandman, but it's hard. No, not because the art on the earlier issues is so awful - I think that adds atmosphere. Because the main character looks just like Neil Gaiman. What is up with that? It's so weird! Also, his mask is the head of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulu.

Look, I drew an old lady with a wheelbarrow and no perspective! )

From left to right: Coke Machine, Hanks, grandpa, me, younger brother, Hank's SUV. My hair's messy from swimming all day, and Alex and I are grinning far too widely. Alex in particular looks crazed. This is the only picture I have where grandpa looks happy. This is the only time I've ever seen grandpa look happy. Thank you Tom Hanks.

Enough Stalling )

Oh yes, and and I've been meaning to mention this. Something [livejournal.com profile] vibrato posted reminded me.

There's a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie coming out! It stars someone I've never heard of, although from the way the British papers were covering it, I could have sworn it was Malkovich. Yes, and Mos Def! Rock on (erm, Rap Out)!

Ha, yes, Encyclopedia Conan Solution. Two people over on detective_conan got this one. Before the hint, I mean, since I really hope that it was more obvious than that afterwards.
Mystery is here.
Hint is here.
And here is the solution. )

I've got a few more mystery ideas and I think I will write them. But, I will not put them here. Maybe just a single post after all parts are completed.

I'm back. See last two entries for fan stuff I did while away.

I won't bore anyone with the details, except to say that both the house and island of Antiparos where we stayed were beautiful and that I had a great time. Instead, I'll put those details and some more photographs up on a website and then post the link here.

But of course I have to mention that I met Tom Hanks. )

While we were talking to him at the dock, Dad was taking spy footage with the telephoto lens from across the water. He positioned himself so it would look like he was filming my mother. He did this on the ferry, too, when Hanks and family were standing a few benches away.

I'm really sorry I didn't ask for an autograph for Oliver, but it didn't occur to me until too late, and anyway, I didn't have any paper or a pen. I ended up getting lots and lots of Ouzo (Greek whiskey) for him instead, which, in retrospect, was a very tasteless thing to do.

Since nothing else I have to say about the trip could possibly be as intersting, I might as well talk about books. )

Anything else interesting that has to do with the trip, but is too inappropriately personal to go on a website, might end up here. In the meantime, perhaps you guys can help settle a bet:

This is the pufferfish keychain I bought in Parikia. I say it's a real pufferfish, encased in plastic. My brother insists it's a model, even after I told him the story of the jade leaves. Tell him that he's wrong for me?

Second of two posts written on vacation in Antiparos, although actually this one was written in Tinos (Greece), London (England), an aeroplane (the Atlantic), and New Jersey (USA). Long live jet lag.

It's a solve-your-own-mystery! How good is your logic? Put it to the test! I'm putting up the mystery today, a hint tomorrow, and the solution the day after that (or, as soon as I finish writing it). Absolutely no knowledge of Detective Conan/ Case Closed needed.

HINT (highlight to read) )

Did anyone else read the Encyclopedia Brown mystery series? This is my blatant rip-off homage to that series. I love love loved those books, even though they had really corny jokes and you solved the crime not with logic but with trivia. For example, I remember one mystery was cracked if you knew that lobsters didn't turn red until you boiled them and another if you knew that only the jack of spades doesn't have a mustache (or something). My personal favorite was the one where you had to know that it's polite to let ladies sit with their backs to the wall in a restaurant, while gentlemen sit with their backs to the room. WTF?

I even copied the writing style of the Encyclopedia Brown books (less most of the bad jokes, unfortunately. I'm just not unfunny enough). This presented some problems, namely a) I haven't read one since second grade, so my memory is a little rusty, and b) I haven't read one since second grade, because they're written for a third grade reading level. Fourth if you're feeling generous. The mysteries were easy, too, obscure trivia notwithstanding.

I'm not sure how easy this one is. Tell me if you got the answer, pweeese? It seems blindingly obvious to me, but that's just because I wrote it (I think). Alex didn't get it.

From now on, all original character names will be taken from Hiroko Sherwin's Eight Million Gods and Demons because they're easy to remember, yet authentic. Additional last names will be from Japanese car companies.

This is the first of two posts I wrote while on vacation. They have nothing to do with anything.

From Antiparos, with love: a Shaman King drabble originally written in commemoration of my reaching the end of Neal Gaiman's American Gods.

This is so exciting that I'm not going to hide it behind a cut, even if it is about my real life. A friend of the family just called, looking for my parents who have already left for the weekend. And he said:

Antiparos, where we're staying for three weeks starting 5am Monday morning, is this summer's hot spot. A number of American movie icons have randomly decided to head out there en mass prior to this year's Olympics. I specifically heard Tom Cruise, among other names. He'll be there when I'll be there.

I'm not a stalker or anything, but this is a 10 mile-wide island with one downtown area. Chances are high.

I'm not exactly branching out, because that would require switching away from the Naruto fandom, but I figured I'd try "art" for a change. Warning! It's been years.

But, you still want to see a punk-ass Naruto and Sasuke, right? )

And V, you like video game music, right? The gamingforce forums are holding votes for the best video game music of all time, and most of the songs are up for download.

Good weekend. I spent most of it wandering around the woods on ours and our neighbor's property. We built a platform in the trees across the creek a few weeks ago, and it already has beer cans strewn all over it. I can't really blame the trespassers, though, since it's such a perfect place to get smashed.

Appologies if anyone's said this before, but in bestseller American Gods by superfan comic-book author Neil Gaiman, page 27, second paragraph, there is a character described as:

"...a tall woman dressed cartoonishly in too-tight silk shorts, her breasts pulled forward and pushed up by the yellow blouse tied beneath them."

Obviously, this is Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop. Later, on page 180, we observe the following interaction:

"A crane-like man with gold-rimmed spectacles was coming up the sidewalk... [Shadow] asked, "Which one of you is Jackal?"

And that would be Dr. Jackal from Get Backers.

Okay, okay, I know the second one isn't Dr. Jackal. He's named as Ibis and is probably actually some god or other. But, the first one bears an uncanny resemblence to Faye, at least until the part where her vagina swallows a stock broker. Given that Gaiman is the man behind the mega Marvel/Victorian England crossover series 1600, he could easily have taken his character appearances from elsewhere.

So far, I kind of like American Gods and kind of don't. Gaiman's not a bad writer, but his style started to irritate after me a little after 100 pages. And this book is 588 pages. Plus, Scott Adams did the whole "old gods don't fit in" bit much better in The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul.

First half of the Les Mis Soundtrack is up for download, second half will be up on Monday.
