This chapter, like the previous ones, stands pretty well on its own but would probably make more sense when read together with the prologue, first chapter, and second chapter. Same warnings as before, but I'll put them up again since it's been a while:

Series: Naruto
Title: Less Than Ideal
Rating: Still G, although at this point I'd have to say it's because I'm a coward.
Genre: Future Fic which will probably become AU in a few weeks, supposedly Naruto-centric. This chapter is, at any rate.
Pairings: Could be read as SasuNaru, but no more so than the show itself. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Summary (whole story): Since the plot got revealed last chapter anyway: It's Naruto's first solo mission. The stakes are high for any number of reasons, but mostly because the target is Uchiha Itachi. Sasuke will forgive him somehow. He thinks.

Chapter Three: Preparations for Certain Victory (Naruto) )

In the original script, Naruto's disguise for infiltrating Akatsuki was going to come from all the bad self-insertion fics I'd read. In that version, he basically disguised himself as a Mary Sue; you can still see a bit of this in his choice of outfit. The end re-introduces angst.

What else? I probably shouldn't be posting this now since it's late and I haven't gotten more than 5 hours of sleep all week, but... it's late. My inhibitions are lowered. Plus, I'm out of town this weekend and want to leave something of mine behind. If I have time tommorrow I'll also leave the Les Mis soundtrack up for download at the website (where currently there is Saiyuki) for [livejournal.com profile] keraha.

Less polish means more comments for me, right? Please?

Lord Marshall: Tell me that Riddick is dead, Aeyron, and I might just save your planet...

...

Lord Marshal: ...FOR LAST.

Aeyron: The chances are good, Lord Marshall...

...

Aeyron: ...that RIDDICK IS STILL ALIVE.

And that would be my Coherent Thought limit for today. Being that I was still on a summer-bum schedule up until yesterday, I am currently experiencing a sense of disorientation not unlike jet-lag (double negative - Orson Welles is frowning at me right now).

Tennis again today: it's almost getting to be a habit. But forget that - I want to talk about the ridiculous amounts of time I spend thinking about fictional characters with large eyes.

Mostly I think about crossovers, my first and only true love. Mostly, I just wish that they would leave me alone. So in hopes of that, I'm going to exorcise summarize a few of them here.

Because it's appropriate : Death Note/Scorpion Shards )
Because I luv character interaction: Yami no Matsuei/Naruto )
Because I luv plot: 3x3 Eyes/Inuyasha )
And, Because There Aren't Enough Excuses in the World for This One: Kenshin/the Lioness Quartet )

Actually I think I've read more crossovers than all other types of fanfic combined. Dunno why--more room for invention? Less slavish devotion to canon without the OOC? Maybe because crossovers tend to have more of a focus on plot. *shrugs*

EDIT: And, because this is so appropriate it hurts, I present to you Random Pairing Generator. Gaked from [livejournal.com profile] falxumbra.

So I lied about having this chapter done. It was almost done, but I couldn't seem to concentrate enough to finish. So, as much as it broke my heart have to post another super-short chapter in which nothing happened, I only put a part of the chapter up... but that was yesterday! Today, I have the whole chapter. If the added bits seem unnaturally short, that's because I ended the chapter earlier than originally planned. It's a stylistic thing - this way I don't have to change viewpoints mid-chapter. If they also seem unnaturally rushed, well... I have no excuse for that.

Prologue is here, Chapter 1, here.
Warnings, etc, are the same as before. Most notably, this is post manga and will likely very shortly be proven AU. Also, I'm never going to finish this.
Summary (whole story): "Naruto is forced a lose-lose situation, where failure means death, enslavement, or, worst of all, being stuck in second place; success means taking away his partner's purpose in life." That's partner in the platonic sense, guys.
Summary(this chapter): The Hokage gets to the part with the plot.

Complete Chapter 2: Mission Statement (Tsunade) )

Starting from the added bits )

I think I need motivation - boredom works well, but then again, I'm a naturally lazy person. In case you're interested, Tsunade was pretty easy to write. Well, this Tsunade was - you may have noticed that she doesn't have a whole lot in common with the real one. From easiest to hardest, I'd put the order at

Tsunade ---> Naruto ---> Sakura ---> Sasuke, although I expect that Jiraiya, when he shows up, will be the new hardest.

EDIT: AANNNDDD someone stole the gas out of my tank. Lovely neighborhood we have here, right V? That's what I get for parking the car out on the street. In my defense, gas prices are high, but they're not that high. The last time this happened I was with the family in Macedonia, and they were rationing.

Using the highly scientific method of a comparison study whose subjects number two, myself and my younger brother, I've decided that watching television is more educational than going online. Moreover, this is true even if Subject A (brother) watches nothing but sitcoms and ESPN while Subject B (myself) peruses political websites. I have come to this conclusion after having observed the way in which subject A utilized the free time he had inadvertently been given by my bad shopping choices (he can't eat fish, breaded, or fried food; three guesses as to what I bought for dinner).

Further Elaboration )

So, yes. In defense of my apparent insecurity, he is my younger brother. Who watches TV all day. Speaking of days, today is a particularly nice one, with fluffy-cloudy skies and a nice warm breeze. It really makes me wish that I had more friends (in this state) who enjoy physical activity. More jobless, on-vacation friends with time to waste, that is. I feel particularly bad for having wasted my weekly shot at an outdoor group activity on tennis yesterday, when it was raining.

*Looks at her profile page and weeps, then laughs* I think I'll keep it for sentimental reasons.

I've actually finished another chapter of that Naruto fanfic thing, but in a rare display of restraint, I won't be posting it here in until tomorrow. I figure I'll give it day, look it over in the morning without the headache, sort of thing. In the meantime, and because I have no illusions about the quality of my own writing, here's some Naruto fanfiction recommendations ) I wrote up for [livejournal.com profile] keraha.

Also, my thoughts on current anime episodes/manga chapters (Naruto, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, Monster, spoiler warnings inside) )These are all personal and probably vastly uninteresting to anyone else. Ah, well.

Book Meme )

Also, I'll be gone from tommorrow until late Monday, because it is Memorial Day Weekend and somehow I missed that. And after I'd promised to meet a friend in the City tomorrow to see the botanical gardens, too. At least he probably couldn't have made it, anyway. Hopefully.

I still have no idea what to title this, so for now I'm calling it "Less Than Ideal." I also considered "Ending Means" and "What Thin Partitions," but with those I was sort of injecting a theme into something which isn't terribly thematic .... relying on the title to convey a message is sort of crutch, right? I guess I'll just pick some random line after I finish.

Wait, did I just say that? I'm not going to finish this, so forget it. Prologue is here.

Series: Naruto

Pairings: None, really. SasuNaru if you're obsessive. SakuLee if you squint.
Disclaimers: Not mine. I'd ruin it.
Description (whole story): "Naruto is forced into a lose-lose situation, where failure means death, enslavement, or, worst of all, being stuck in second place; success means taking away his partner's purpose in life."
Description (this chapter): Sakura at 17. From whence comes strength?

Chapter 1: Because That's How it Is (Sakura) )

Problems I see with this one:
I think I made the "moral message" too obvious. Too much telling. And poor Sakura, so callously used for exposition purposes... not a lot happens in this chapter. Working in italics is both a pain and another crutch. Also, the style here is different from the style of the prologue. I wrote this one first, my first-ever piece of fanfiction for any series. So of course it's mostly an introspective (what you mean there's something else?).
