sub_dividedI forgot how much I like dancing. On the other hand, OW MY FEET. Damn high heels.
So I'm not working in the Spin Physics Lab. Good thing, too: any research group that averages twenty jokes an hour on the incompetance of the Prof is probably not one I want to work for. (Make that, definately not.) They're doing high energy proton spin collisions over there, only not really, since they have practically no money and all the nice equiptment is broken. But I stopped by the lab anyway--I wanted to learn how to run the Big Machine. That thing is So Fucking Cool. I've been (mostly unsucessfully) resisting the urge to explain it to people all day.
Instead I'm working for SNAP. The idea is to build a satellite covered with infrared detectors for measuring the red shift of supernova. The shift gets you the speed with which they're moving away from us; plotting speed against time (in astronomy "how long ago did this happen" is a function of the distance away) gives you an improved idea of the history of the expansion of the universe, including the role of "dark" (vacuum) energy. For an undergrad like me this means either running computer-simulated data or calibrating detectors, but with a Sense of Purpose.
I'm being vague because I doubt anyone cares, but I also really want to talk about this stuff so if you're genuinely interested? (I can't see glazed looks over the internet. I WIN.)
NEW GOAL
Truly evil narration. A POV character who is an absolute bastard, and who the reader understands is an absolute bastard, but whose thoughts still make sense in his own head. Ideally the "creep-out" factor will be high. (^^; three guesses who this is, first two don't count.) It'll be pretty hard to do, I think, since most people's first instinct is to sympathize with the protagonist.
