Two fics in two days, I'm on a roll! Actually this story has been 90% complete for the last three weeks, but I had no desire to work on it because I hated it. SO. MUCH. It's very long. There's a lot of extraneous description. It's not very original. It doesn't exactly match my impression of the series either. To be honest I wasn't going to finish it, but then I figured, it is 90% done, and I hate wasting effort more than I hate this fic, so. >_< suggestions for improvement welcome.

Title: Pillars
Fandom: Mushishi
Characters: Ginko, original
Genre: Psuedo-episode type thing
Notes: Absolutely no knowledge of Mushishi required to read this. In fact it might be better if you don't know anything. I've only seen the anime to episode 12 and I haven't read the manga, so if I got anything wrong feel free to correct me.

Mushishi fanfiiiiiiic )

AUGH. I've got another four five ideas for this series, maybe one of those will turn out better.

Mushishi (the anime) is not like this story in that:
1) we don't like the characters for their weaknesses, we like them because they are supernaturally calm, loyal, stoic, and dependable.
2) If there's a character in Mushishi with negative emotions, 9 / 10 of the time it's a mushi causing them and not human weakness.
3) When a character tells a story in Mushishi, all the numbers have been filed off. The stories are stripped to their most essential parts.

Mushishi (the anime) is like this story, unlike the horror stories that inspired it, in that
1) Mushi can sometimes be harmful, but they are not actively malicious. They only harm incidentally.
2) Humans live at the mercy of nature, and ACCEPT this fact. Hence my previous mention of STOICISM.
3) Is that really a child? Capable children, children who are more reliable than adults.

I love watching Mushishi because:
1) No one is ever mean or cruel; no one lets the total arbitrariness unfairness of the mushi to get to them.
2) By the end of the episode Ginko always manages to rationally explain the mushi's behavior which, it turns out, is not so arbitrary after all! It's like salve for the post-modern soul!
3) It's pretty.

Been sick all week. Wrote this in three hours on a whim -- for some strange reason it's always easier to write when I'm feeling sick (mostly about other people feeling sick, but I take what I can get).

Title: Call Me Anytime**
Fandom: Loveless
Chaarcters: Soubi, Ritsuka
Genre: They talk a lot? No pr0n, although the end is sort of...veering that way. Um.

**If you can think of a title for this story that doesn't give anything away AND doesn't sound like a bad pick-up line, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Call Me Anytime )

EDIT: Next Chapter

I've decided to turn this into a series. Expect the tone to vary wildly from chapter to chapter, 'cause there are a lot of different themes in the manga and I want to hit all of them. (Um. A lot of them at least.) Rating / disturbance level may go up as story continues, so if you liked the way this chapter went and don't want to see it ruined, feel free to treat it as a oneshot. That was what it was when I wrote it anyway.

What the heck, I don't even use three icons.

THINGS I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SUMMER:

May: Five Fists of Science. Twain and Tesla: they fight crime!
June: Suikoden I and II for PSP. Huzzah portable ports! (I don't know the real release date for this, if it gets a US release at all.)
July: Tales from Earthsea movie. IMBDB listing.
August: Snakes on a Plane. Like you don't already know what this is.

Updated the gmail accounts.

Off to the Museum of Art for the Japanese landscape exhibit, Real Seafood Co. for limited-time-only Sashimi-grade tuna, and the Quality 16 to see V for Vendetta. I'm in Michigan for Spring Break, by the way.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I am both drunk and internet famous, at least for the next hour. Lost track of drinks, there was some Molston via beer pong, some Guiness-Baileys-Whiskey, a few more Molstons, some more Guiness, a lot of rum and cokes, and oh! Some vodka. I was at George's party earlier too, hanging with people who make me ashamed to be this sober. Those guys started drinking 6:30 A freaking M. Hardcore, man.

God this party is boring (well obviously, considering I am posting to livejournal). And God, I hate drunk posts. Here, have a book review, maybe it will make me feel better.

Coherancy is asking way too much right now. Right now, I just want to go to sleep.

Hey, a pole-dancing contest! NVM, got to go. Happy St. Patrick's!

I'm trying to figure out how many poses from this year's Rising Stars of Manga finalist Samurai Zombie were ripped off from Blade of the Immortal. In the first three volumes of BoTI I found this one, this one, and this one.

...what the heck. I wouldn't do this with a legitimate entry, but here's a zip file of the contest entry in question, for ease of comparison:

Samurai Zombie Dot Zip

The Samurai Zombie figures I'm talking about are on the fourth page bottom right, fifth page top left, and eighth page bottom right. This is using the page numbers on the zip file, where two pages = one page, because the original pages aren't numbered and I can't be bothered to count them. It's really obvious which poses I mean, anyway.

EDIT For the record, since this post is being passed around: I'm not the one who first pointed out the similarities between Samurai Zombie and Blade of the Immortal. That was [livejournal.com profile] telophase. She talks about it in her review of this year's Rising Stars of Manga finalists here (first part of post here).

EDIT 2: This panel comparison wins. Recreates the entire last page of Samurai Zombie from Blade of the Immortal panels, among other things (comparison is [livejournal.com profile] madame_manga's).

For the last few days I've been [livejournal.com profile] reading_genji. XD about time, I've only been in that community since December! I probably won't be as detailed after chapter 11 (the last chapter I read over the summer in a different translation) since it's a total pain in the neck, but here's my summary/commentary for the first four chapters of The Tale of Genji:

One
Two
Three
Four

Or just check the main community page, they'll be the first four entries from the top. Generally I'm not trying to be entertaining or deep, just thorough, in that the entries are what I honestly think (plus background information so that people who haven't read the book will be able to follow along).

1. From today's Dear Abby -

"Dear Abby: After 23 years of what I thought was a happy marriage, I came home and caught my husband, "Wes," in bed having sex with my brother. It was a shock, to say the least."

The husband claims amnesia, saying he was at a bar with the brother when they were given a pill "of unknown origin." The woman loves "Wes" and wants to make the marriage work, but she can't seem to get the picture of her brother....anyway, she can't get it out of her head. What can she do to forget?

Abby reccommends the Straight Spouse Network.

2. So who knows Loveless fic where Soubi cooks for Ritsuka? I've decided I really like the cooking angle because it combines two interesting character details, Soubi's cultural/aesthetic sense and Ritsuka eating really badly most of the time. (Okay, so this is pretty much an OMG SOMEONE FEED THE POOR NEGLECTED CHILD reaction. But canon!)

3. I resent John Stewart for turning my cult show into a major phenomenon, but admit that he and The Daily Show go great together. He and the Oscars, on the other hand... *shakes head* I don't think the Academy Awards have ever had more hype for less entertainment. Hollywood has been taking itself way too seriously lately.

4. And now the real purpose of this post:

R.I.P. Kirby Puckett, still my favorite baseball player (by extension, the Twins are still my favorite team). I was a bit shaken by the domestic abuse allegations following your retirement, but ten years of teen hero worship do not just go away; and of course it's tragic that you died so young (just 44! It's as bad as Douglas Adams or Octavia E. Butler).

Anything to avoid writing what I said I'd write, right? I heard this song on the radio and thought it was a music video song, but then I needed to match it with something, but then Loveless was the first thing that came to mind, but then I needed to download the anime because I um. Never got past the third epsisode.***

I had no plan for this video. Or no I did have a plan, it looked like this:

1. Lyrics-matching *
2. Maybe a running montage during the instrumental bridge?
3. Avoid scenes that get a lot of play in other Loveless music videos (I've seen three!) *
3. Lots of clips of Ritsuka's crazy mom *
4. Soubi doesn't show up until the line "One says it's true love until the end of time / Another runs away" *
5. Explosions *

* FAILED.

I started yesterday afternoon and finished five minutes ago. Enough of that time was spent cursing my laptop for not having enough contiguous free memory to edit music videos without crashing every five minutes that I actually read all the way through The Complete Letters of Arthur Rimbauld while waiting for Windows XP to restart and Windows Movie Maker (WMM) to load.

Here's what I learned about WMM )

IN SHORT see if I ever make another music video. XD. Ignoring the crashes, it is ridiculously easy to make music videos with WMM. On the other hand getting the timing of cuts right is incredibly frustrating: the preview alternately lags and jumps ahead and the timeline doesn't subdivide smaller than whole seconds, rendering much of the editing work guesswork.

I thought about naming this AMV "Ritsuka's Pain," but I decided that, the last two days aside, I am not that masochistic.

EDIT: fixed the video following suggestions from [livejournal.com profile] rabbitprint (thank you!), who assures me it is not as bad as I think it is.

Loveless - It's All that You Can Do FINAL VERSION

Please tell me what you think. I shouldn't need to say this, but I will: this is my first (last?) music video.

***About Loveless:
Some of you might remember how that last time I talked about this show, I said it was unfair for something so awful to be so pretty and have such great vocal talent. I stand by those comments. On the other hand I like the manga A LOT. The difference is:

The anime is so much more ernest. How am I supposed to appreciate the story of an abused, amnesiac sixth-grade catboy who is molested by his super-submissive university-student stalker "servant" -- with whom he fights psychic battles aginst other, similarly screwed-up pairs -- when I am asked to take it seriously?

Which is not to say that there are no serious themes in the manga (they're the same as in the anime), but the manga has, how should I put this, more of an exploratory spirit. Loveless Anime is not shonen manga bad but it does occasionally stray into TODAY'S MORAL LESSON IS territory. My default setting is "serious"! I need to be told it's okay to just relax and enjoy something before I can just relax and enjoy it. The anime's combination of incredibly screwed up characters and expectation that the audience will learn something from them really got to me. On the other hand all the incredibly screwed up things I couldn't stand in the anime, I love in the manga, if that makes any sense.

[livejournal.com profile] fanthology is up and the current theme is "Fairytales." Little Red Riding Hood seems to be a popular one, I wonder why that is. Recs for this theme don't have to include characters from series A pretending to be characters from fairytale B, they can just use fairytale language or themes or be evocative of fairytales in general. Personally I feel that as long as the reccer can justify the rec it's all good.

That said, there are a few stories I wanted to rec to fanthology this week, but didn't because I couldn't bring myself to stretch the theme that far. Instead I'll talk about them here:

The First Death gives Yami no Matsuei a mythological grounding that has pretty much replaced the canon for me. Muraki is living perpetually on the edge of death -- until the paperwork catches up, at least -- and his mother and Tsuzuki were part of an agreement between an angel and a devil... the problem is that the myth is not particularly fairytale-like, and it doesn't show up until more than halfway through the story. If I had to classfy this fic as anything, I'd call it an exceptionally convoluted case fic.
Why you should read it: well reasoned, well plotted, well written and adds to the canon. It's long, but easily keeps the reader's attention since individual chapters are short and varied (here third person POV, here first, here a mission report or journal entry).

Mountains Once More starts with "Once upon a time" and that's where the fairytale similarities end. ^^;; the story, which is Sanzo/Goku (Saiyuki), is framed by another story, but the framing story is a parable not a fairytale. I couldn't have recced this in any case, as Aki's fic is locked and her ff.net account has disappeared.
Why you should read it: It has socially retarded!Sanzo and mature!Goku, which is the way I like the characters to be when they're paired together. In the author's own words, "39 fic which doesn't turn one of the characters into a female or a pedophile."

A Hundred Years Ago is Peter Pan fic written in the style of J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, which is written in the style of a fairytale. I'm not sure, but I think that might be one degree of separation too many... also, this fic has been recced by everyone and their grandmother already.
Why you should read it: Exactly captures the style of the original, is twisted and symbolic and, in classic fairytale fashion, slightly surreal. If someone else reccommended this to fanthology I would not bat an eye. Implied onesided Hook/Pan.

Medea Dreams, by Tin for Count Cain, exactly fits the theme, but I liked the postscript better.
Why you should read it: It has that strange quality where even though I didn't particularly like it, one year later I still remember it, and even remember most of the lines. This is probably a better indicator of quality than "like" or "dislike" anyway.

An Evening of Sevens is [livejournal.com profile] memlu's breathless Fakir/Ahiru holiday fic that doesn't fit into Princess Tutu's timeline but is just as poignant. Like Mountains Once More, it's framed by a another story, only this time the framing story is a fairytale so you could make a case for this fic counting for the theme, maybe. In fact I might change my mind and rec it if no one else does.
Why you should read it: it's beautiful and soooo romantic. I was iffy on the characterization at first, because the perfect dialogue is a little too perfect for Fakir and Ahiru, but once you get a little further into the story it makes sense, in its own way. You don't need to know anything about Princess Tutu to enjoy this.

***

I could really have sworn there were more than this -- more that exactly fit the theme too -- but I don't keep bookmarks and my memory isn't too good, so.

[livejournal.com profile] team7 and I were talking about the revival of [livejournal.com profile] fanthology as a themed recs comm. The way it would work is: there is a new theme every two weeks, which is announced two weeks in advance. During that time, group members post fanfiction reccomendations that somehow fit the theme. All fandoms welcome.

I thought this could also work on an A side/B side system, where the themes for the first half of each month are perfectly respectable and/or have literary merit, while the themes for the second half of each month are the opposite. High school au and mpreg and vampirefic so on, fics whose ff.net summaries are wearing out your scroll button. Because there are always exceptions to badfic rules, right?

What I mean to say is please fill out this preliminary survey.

[Poll #678170]

If one "other" box is not enough for you (oh please oh please oh please say it isn't), there's always comments.

Now that there are these themes, I need your help remembering a couple fics.

What was the name of the fic where... )

I'll be honest, here. I absolutely do not:
1. have decent taste in music
2. download everything at [livejournal.com profile] fst
3. download more than 10% of what's at [livejournal.com profile] fst
4. have my harddrive with me. (Technically, I do have the drive, but I've lost the cable that connects it to my laptop.)

With no access to the mp3s themselves, I went hunting through [livejournal.com profile] fst's archives and made this list from memory. It's almost entirely arbitrary. In no particular order )

Can't remember the rest without harddrive. Woe. My manga is on that drive too.
